Post-racial. This is a word I have been hearing since the beginning of the election season. Just about every Presidential candidate was heard using this word peppered thoughout their speeches. What exactly does Post-racial mean?
Post - (prefix) 1 a: after : subsequent : later <postdate> b: behind : posterior : following after <postlude> <postconsonantal>2 a: subsequent to : later than <postoperative> b: posterior to <postorbital>
Racial - (adjective) 1 : of, relating to, or based on a race <a racial minority> 2 : existing or occurring between races <racial equality>
Combining the two words would lead one to assume that the proponents of the term Post-racial seem to believe that the present situation places our society beyond the grasps of racial importance. In other words, we are out of the bonds of racism and into non-racial enlightenment. Oh if this were only true. Who wouldn't want a utopia on this earth? Can you imagine how much pain and suffering would cease if we were in a Post-racial world?
Put your imagination on hold and join us back in reality. We are not in a post-racial world. First off, as long as there are two people on the planet of different skin color or language, there will be racism. This isn't cynicism, its pure fact based on human history and human nature. People always have to find a bogey-man to blame their faults and stupidity on and race is one of the easier justifications. This being said, race relations have gotten better. It didn't happen overnight. It took years of hard work for this to occur. I leave this for a different posting.
I do not believe we are in a period of Post-racialism. I believe we are smack dab in the middle of racial importance. There was a time when racial bigots were outright blunt and kept nothing hid about their bigotry. This has changed. Numerous labels have been given to describe out present racial dilemma. The most popular being "the soft hand of bigotry" and the "bigotry of low expectations." Creating lower standards for people of a different race because they seem to have a problem otherwise. This, in and of itself, is racism. I must have missed the biology and anatomy classes they explained the physical link between a person's skin pigment and the intelligence and character. Woudl someone please provide me with this information?
When I was young I was told by my teachers that the best way to defeat racism was through education. While the teachers were saying this, people out in the regular world would laugh and claim that all education did was make smarter bigots. 20 years later I have to admit that the regular people were right. The proof being the actions of self-proclaimed civil rights activists and politicians. Throw in the educated ignorance of the masses and you have a society of people who have eradicated racism by redefining in.
As long as there are hyphenated Americans, there is racism. As long as a person gets a job because of racial quotas, there is racism. As long as people receive extra points for college admission based on their race, there is racism. As long as people use their race as a crutch, and others allow it, there is racism. As long as people can scream racism and not accept their own ignorance, there is racism.
Here's a clue for the racially clueless. White people aren't the only racists in this country. Some of the most vile racial comments I have heard did not come from white people. The only concern racism has for skin color is determined by the racist.
For those politicians that chimed about the US being in a Post-racial society, next time pay attention to the voters. How many people were not shy about claiming that it was time for the US to have a black President? People cast out ideology and beliefs and voted for a Black man because of his skin color. This is racist. The idea that racism has to always physically or mentally harm somebody is rubbish (By the way, wasn't the President's mother white?). Any decision or action based on the color of a person's skin is racism. It makes no difference whether you give somebody an Ice Cream or a whipping. If it's done because of the color of the skin, it is racism. They are both dangerous. In fact, the ice cream is probably more dangerous in the long run.
Here's a simple question to ask: If God doesn't care about the color of a person's skin, why should I? It is that simple.
