For quite some time I have heard that Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen to some) is a moderate. To believe this one had to compare his stance to that of Hamas or Hizbollah. When comparing him to the west he is not a moderate. In fact he's down right vicious. He learned well from his predecessor Yassir Arafat. The two are like peas in a pod. Neither has any intention of living up to deals with Israel, neither has real control over the factions within "Palestine" nor has there been any actual intention to do so. Mr. Abbas is more concerned with maintaining his position in the Palestinian Authority and staying alive than he is creating a peace in "Palestine".
Proof of this was never more evident than what we are hearing coming out of the Mecca meeting with Khalid Mashaal and Ismail Haniyeh. Abbas did nothing to moderate Hamas' approach to Israel. In fact he did the opposite. He has given his approval to all of Hamas' tactics. He acted like a man who was in fear for his life instead of for the lives of who he was elected to protect. In America we call this a coward.
I have predicted that it won't be too long before Hamas takes over the PA and the PLO and we are off to another round of war. Mr. Abbas is living on borrowed time. He has two choices: Allow Hamas to do what it wants to do and keep his position or grow a spine, confront Hamas, and risk death. I don't see anything resembling courage in Mr. Abbas so you know what I predict he will do.
The West and Israel need to drop this moderate mantra. It was false in the beginning it is more so now. Quit living in a make-a-believe world and deal only with fact. The rest of us knew Abbas was no moderate. Now it is proven. Deal with fact and not desire. If not, Abbas will climb the ranks of diplomacy and get his own Nobel Peace Prize while thousands are murdered. That seems to be the only way to succeed in the diplomatic world.
