Syria has been in cahoots with Iran for sometime now. They have helped fund, train, and arm Hizbollah. After they supposedly withdrew from Lebanon they have sent Hizbollah after the government and instigated a battle with Israel. In short, Syria is an arm of Iran. Why should they be believed when they claim to want to open discussion with Israel or the US? AS is the Islamist approach to propaganda, they make an ambiguous public statement and watch as the western media and politicos go ga-ga over their attempts to reconcile with the west. They have to be getting a big kick out of this. They're probably also surprised that this approach still works. It's no wonder they think they can defeat us.
The media seems more than willing to be manipulated. After admissions by CNN and others of not reporting the truth, why should any of us believe anything they are reporting? I definitely shouldn't believe anything being reported from Syria or Iran. The racist gaggle that just occurred in Iran received a level of legitimacy just be the fact it was reported on.
Unless Israel attacks Hizbollah with relentless abandon, Syria will rule Lebanon by proxy. This means that Iran will have spread it's control. If we are going to add more troops into Iraq then we need to go all out and wage war in the entire region. Get rid of Assad and Ahmadinejad. If we don't plan on getting rid of these despots then we should stay out of the region altogether. That being the case, build a wall around America and let the rest of the world collapse. These are the only options we have. The latter implies kissing up to the Islamists to leave us alone. The former requires having the resolve to destroy the enemy.
No matter what approach we take, the immediate future is not pretty. It's the long term future that matters. What are we willing to do?
