Gotcha Politics. Israeli style

Any American can tell you how personal attacks on political figures has changed the political landscape in the United States. If you don't like a person's opinion on a topic, attack their character. Every sigle one of us has something in our past that can be exploited. Even the most trivial of acts or statements get blown into a crisis. Whether it happened 20 years ago or last week doesn't matter. The media will grab hold and turn it into the most atrocious act you have ever heard of.

Israel is facing it's own bout with gotch politics. I do not know if Mr. Katsav is guilty of rape. I do not have access to the evidence or the witnesses. I see this as a desperate act by the opposition to defame not only Mr. Katsav but also Mr. Olmert. Reading my blog you realize that I have no love lost for Mr. Olmert. However, it is not because of his personality or character but because of his policies and lack of action. I believe Mr. Katsav will probably be absolved of most of the charges against him especially the most serious. By then, the damage will have been done. I believe that Mr. Katsav is now victim to the ends justify the means. I am not one that believes this idea.

The Olmert administration is having enough problems. Political scandals on top of political indecision are enough to give anyone the boot. I don't understand why the personal has to come into this. If this is what it takes to get people to act the, as a people, we have failed. In America scandals take the American eye off of the real problem. It's usually a distraction. It is also an indicator of what the real problem is. Mainly 24 hour news services need to have something to report on even if it's made up.

As I stated, I do not know the evidence against Mr. Katsav. I just have a bad feeling that what is being done to him is wrong. Personal character does matter. Failures to live up to one's own standards matters. Throwing tiny pieces of evidence to the people and then deciding solely on this miuntae of evidence is wrong. Serious ethical violations calls for the official to step down or be put out of office. Whether right or wrong, what Mr. Katsav is going through comes across as purely political. This is wrong.
