Based on my piece yesterday, Islamism cannot be defeated. It can be contained, quelled, and maybe controlled, but never defeated. As long as people that support this ideology, actively or passively, it will not be defeated. Just as the idea of Communism, Socialism, and Fascism still exist, Islamism will continue to live. As of now it is performing on the largest stage it has had since the middle ages. Because it is an ideology of hatred, hopefully it can consume itself. Outside forces can only act as containment. Wars will be fought, as they have already begun, just to contain this ideology. However, like other ideologies, it will not be eradicated.
This may sound like a defeatist attitude. It is not. It is just a realization that what is in a man’s mind cannot be wiped out. The ideology can be proven wrong. It can be proven to be evil. This doesn’t matter. In order for an ideology to be defeated, people must deny it en masse. This won’t happen.
Unfortunately the only way to contain an ideology is to fight it. The power of the sword and the pen must be brought against it. This is a continuous battle that can’t take a reprieve. Any break in the fight, and the ideology expands. At best, an ideology can be cast to the fringe. Something about the human thought process prohibits it from totally denying any ideology. There is something within an ideology that will always appeal to people.
Let the battle against Islamism continue. We cannot afford to let it dominate.
